Scribes Instruction Description (New Instructors)

Scribes is an intensive summer creative writing program in Seattle for middle and high school students. Students will acquire a tool kit of literary forms, pick up exercises and techniques to develop their writer’s voice, be exposed to diverse contemporary and classic literary texts, get serious feedback from instructors and peers, and tour the city with a writer’s eye.

Each of the Scribes sessions is composed of twenty students, two instructors, and one or two interns. Class runs from 10am-4pm for two weeks, Monday through Friday, with the exception of one session, which runs for a single week. Community readings are held on the second Thursday evening of each session. Each session will produce a chapbook of the students' work.

For summer 2018, Hugo House is holding eight Scribes sessions, beginning July 9 and ending August 17. Some of the sessions will be held at Hugo House. As with in the past, some of the sessions will be held at partner sites, including the Museum of History and Industry (MOHAI), and the Henry Art Gallery. One session will be reserved for middle school participants. The others will be reserved for high school aged participants only. The youngest participants we will take this summer, are students entering 7th grade. These students will be able to register only in the middle-school-only session, which is open to students entering 7th and entering 8th grade.

We’re asking all potential teachers, new and returning, to apply through a common application process. This will help us communicate information about the program, as well as track scheduling requests, update info necessary for grants, learn about teaching styles in order to create complementary co-instructors, and to understand each returning instructor's vision for Scribes 2018.

Additionally, all new teacher applicants will go through an application and may be selected for an interview process, assuring all qualified applicants get a chance at open positions.
